Underneath a Panther's Black Fur
Putting in More Hours

My Main Job:

I work forty hours a week. My responsibilities are fairly easy. Light paperwork most of the time and some times light machinery work. A few months back I expressed interest in a pick-up supervisor position. That means that if they need an extra supervisor they can call me, but if they don't I work on the production floor like normal. I did not get the position. They gave it to an operator who had already been a pick-up supervisor in the past. So I have a little "bird" that kinda keeps me informed about what the supervisors' boss is thinking. I have been trying to make a good impression on the supers and their boss so that I would get noticed and maybe get picked up the next time they choose another super. "Bird" told me that there are about eight people who are interested in the pick-up position. The man who makes the recomendation to the man three levels above me has been keeping an eye on all eight of us. From what my resource says, if the man two above me had to choose today, as it stands I would be first choice. That means that I am doing something right. If I get this position it means more hours and not really a raise. I would just get paid for the overtime that I work before and after the rest of the crew isn't there anymore. Extra paperwork on both ends. I understand that there are outside factors that come into play that my performance has nothing to do with. Right now I am just hoping that I get the position. I know that I have a few things counting against me. The main thing right now is my age. I am only 21. There are several people that have worked at this place longer than I have been alive. I don't think that I would get the respect that a supervisor should recieve. But in the end if I got it, the bottom line would be "I'm the boss and you aren't". I just have to keep my cool and so on and so forth. Again...IF I get the position.

My NEW Second Job:

Today was my first day at a second job that I just picked up. A friend of a friend has a tanning salon. They are a little short handed right now so I told her that I would help her out. It is almost like not going to work at all. I am used to shifts that are at least seven hours long. At the salon I only work 1pm - 4pm. I usually wait longer than that to go to lunch. I tried working on the computer a little bit. That was pretty simple. I learned how to clean the beds. Very simple. Working the register was a little more complicated. I just gotta remember where everything is and what buttons to push and when. I have never worked in a retail environment before. A small portion of working at the salon is that. Sell the product. No, not the actual tan. But the most friggin' expensive lotions ever to go with it. There is one bottle of lotion that we sell for about $75. GEES! I don't deal well with drama. Already in my first day I hear about a bunch of it. So and so is stealing. So and so isn't doing her job right. Etc. Etc. Etc. Oh well. It's only three hours a day four days a week and I get unlimited free tanning. The hours that I work will be with only two different people. So hopefully the drama will be kept to a minimum. So, all and all I think this will be a good deal for me to get some extra tan and some extra cash for not doing a lot of extra work.
